Why Travel Protection Should Be Part of Your Vacation Plans

Planning a vacation is exciting. You choose the perfect destination, reserve your accommodations, book your transportation, and begin counting down the days. But what happens when the unexpected interrupts your plans?

Illness, severe weather, flight delays, lost baggage, and family emergencies can happen before or during a trip. Travel protection may help reduce the financial impact of certain covered situations and provide valuable assistance when you are away from home.

What Is Travel Protection?

Travel protection is designed to provide benefits for specific unexpected events that may affect your trip. Depending on the plan you select, benefits may include:

  • Trip cancellation or interruption

  • Emergency medical care while traveling

  • Emergency medical evacuation

  • Flight or travel delays

  • Missed connections

  • Delayed, damaged, or lost baggage

  • Travel assistance services

Every plan is different. Coverage is based on the plan’s terms, conditions, benefit limits, and exclusions. That is why travelers should always review their plan documents carefully before purchasing.

Protecting Your Vacation Investment

Many vacation expenses are prepaid and may become partially or completely nonrefundable as your departure date approaches. These expenses can include airfare, cruises, hotel stays, vacation packages, excursions, and transportation.

If you must cancel or interrupt your trip for a reason covered by your plan, travel protection may reimburse certain eligible prepaid, nonrefundable expenses. Covered reasons vary, so simply changing your mind or deciding that you no longer want to travel is generally not covered by a standard plan.

Some providers offer an optional “Cancel for Any Reason” benefit for an additional cost. This benefit generally has special eligibility requirements, deadlines, and reimbursement limits.

Medical Emergencies Away From Home

Your regular health insurance may provide limited coverage—or no coverage at all—when traveling internationally. Medicare also has limited coverage outside the United States. Travel medical benefits may help with eligible expenses if you become unexpectedly sick or injured during your trip.

Emergency medical evacuation benefits may also be important when a traveler must be transported to an appropriate medical facility. The U.S. Department of State recommends considering medical evacuation insurance, particularly when traveling to places with limited medical care.

Before leaving, contact your health insurance provider to learn what coverage you already have at your destination.

Help With Delays and Baggage Problems

A delayed flight can lead to unexpected expenses for meals, transportation, or accommodations. Baggage can also be delayed, damaged, or lost.

Depending on the plan and the length or cause of the delay, travel protection may provide benefits for certain eligible expenses. Always keep your receipts, reports, and travel documents because they may be required when submitting a claim.

When Should You Purchase Travel Protection?

It is best to review your options soon after making your initial trip payment. Some benefits may only be available when a plan is purchased within a specified period after the first deposit.

Waiting until the last minute may limit your options. Travel protection also cannot cover an event that was already known or reasonably foreseeable when the plan was purchased.

Questions to Ask Before Purchasing

Before selecting a plan, consider asking:

  • What cancellation and interruption reasons are covered?

  • Are pre-existing medical conditions included or excluded?

  • Does the plan provide emergency medical and evacuation benefits?

  • What are the benefit limits and deductibles?

  • Are cruises and excursions included?

  • Are adventure activities covered?

  • What documentation is required to file a claim?

  • Is “Cancel for Any Reason” available?

  • What situations are excluded?

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners also recommends reviewing both the benefits and exclusions before purchasing a plan.
